Currituck County commissioners voted last week to make a change in lifeguard services on the beaches of Corolla and have decided to switch providers for the first time since the service started almost a quarter-century ago.
Lighthouse Resort Services Inc. was awarded a four-year contract on Dec. 1 after submitting a lower bid than Corolla Ocean Rescue Inc., which had handled lifeguard services on the Currituck Banks since 1991.
Several members of the Board of Commissioners said the decision to make a change was a tough one, owing to the length of experience of Corolla Ocean Rescue on the beach.

The Graveyard 100 is designed to be a point-to-point course with the intention of running from Corolla to Hatteras via Highway 12. The 100-mile course is actually 101.5 miles point-to-point Cutoff is 30 hours.
On March 7th, runners will see the beauty of the Outer Banks, and the beautiful landscapes including 3 of the famous North Carolina Lighthouses!
Runners will travel the entire length of paved highway on Bodie Island and Hatteras Island viewing much of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore via historic Hwy 12.

A decomposed juvenile humpback whale washed up off Corolla on Friday, and was swept away by the nor’easter, and returned Monday five miles to the south in Duck.
The Outer Banks Marine Mammal Stranding Network received a phone call Friday about a large dead whale floating off the sand bar in Pine Island, according to N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission program coordinator Karen Clark.
Biologists were going conduct a necropsy on the cetacean and the carcass was to be buried above the high tide line, but the weather turned, and the remains were gone by Sunday afternoon.

Senator Bill Cook (R-District 1) issued the following statement on Thursday, Dec. 04, 2014, after the North Carolina Board of Transportation released a draft of the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP):
“I am extremely pleased to see financing included in the draft STIP for the Mid-Currituck County Bridge. Since getting to Raleigh, I have been advocating and promoting the need for the Mid-Currituck County Bridge in the Northeastern part of the state.
One of the most critical obligations for the bridge is to reduce the hurricane clearance time for residents and visitors during an emergency evacuation,” Cook said.
“This transportation announcement is a key development for Northeastern North Carolina, and I thank Governor McCrory, Secretary Tata and N.C. DOT Division 1 Board Member Malcolm Fearing for their continued leadership on this project.”

On Dec. 3, 2014, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 5771, the Tax Increase Prevention Act of 2014, by a strong bipartisan vote of 378-46. The House bill includes a one-year extension of several expired tax provisions that benefit realtors and their clients, including tax relief for mortgage debt forgiveness. The relief is effective retroactive to Jan. 1, 2014, but expires again in just a few weeks, on Dec. 31, 2014.
Also included in the bill are one-year extensions of the 15-year depreciation schedule for leasehold improvements, the deduction of mortgage insurance premiums, and the deduction for energy efficient commercial buildings.
With time running out before the expected Dec. 11 adjournment of the Congress, House leaders put together H.R. 5771 as a last effort to prevent tax increases for many Americans for 2014. While there are many in the Senate of both parties who are disappointed with only a one-year extension of the expired provisions, H.R. 5771 is likely to pass as the last best alternative to no tax extenders bill at all.
